II Matha Chitras

Originated in the State of Orissa, Matha chitra, or painting on tasar silk, is a hybrid of tradition and modernity that depicts the diverse cultural traditions of India.  These paintings are drawn on pieces of tasar cloth on which layers of chalk and tamarind paste are applied to give a leathery finish to the surface. The themes of Matha chitras are usually religious and mythological associated with Lord Jagannath, the Mahabharat and the Ramayana. Tasar paintings can be rolled, folded or laminated and can be used as wall hanging and greeting cards.
